Mbappe to leave PSG this summer ahead of Real Madrid move

Striker’s future has been the subject of speculation for a while – with his contract scheduled to expire this summer

Paris Saint-Germain will use the €200 million a year (£171million) they will save following Kylian Mbappé finally informing them that he is leaving the club this summer to re-shape their squad.
A move for striker Victor Osimhen, whose buy-out clause at Napoli is €130 million (£111.2million), is set to be followed by a number of other deals.
PSG will also offer new contracts to their rising stars Warren Zaire-Emery, the 17-year-old French midfielder who is already a mainstay to the team, and Xavi Simons, the 20-year-old Dutch attacking midfielder who is currently on loan at RB Leipzig.
Another rising star is Bradley Barcola who scored, along with Mbappé, in the 2-0 win at home to Real Sociedad in the first leg of PSG’s Champions League last-16 tie.
Telegraph Sport reported on February 4 that sources had indicated Mbappé had decided to leave PSG when his contract expires at the end of this campaign, having refused several attempts to persuade him to sign a new deal.
Mbappé is set to, at last, sign for Real Madrid having changed his mind on a deal to Spain at the last minute two years ago and, previously, before that when €180 million (£153 million) was offered for him. It is the fee he was signed for from Monaco in 2018.
The 25-year-old then tried to force his way out of PSG last summer by stating he had no intention of taking up the option of a further 12 months on his current contract.
PSG stood firm and, having banished him to train away from the first-team, reintegrated Mbappé and even persuaded him to relinquish highly-lucrative bonuses that were due.
Interestingly the exact terms of his departure now are yet to be fully agreed with negotiations set to take place between Mbappé and PSG over the structure of his departure.
It remains to be seen whether he waives the right to any other money due to him or, indeed, whether a contract is actually signed to allow PSG to receive a fee for the captain of France and how that will work out.
PSG had hoped to realise a fee of €120 million (£102 million) for Mbappé but are adamant that on whatever terms he leaves they will not lose out financially.
When the deal for his departure is eventually agreed there is likely to be a joint statement from PSG and Mbappé but that may still be months away.
Despite PSG’s desire to keep Mbappé – and it is understood they have offered a bigger contract to him than he will receive from Madrid – there will also be some relief at his departure, given the huge amounts of money it will release.
Extraordinarily PSG will have lost Mbappé, Lionel Messi and Neymar within a year as they turn away the ‘Galacticos’ policy – less bling bling’ as one source put it – they pursued in their attempts to win the Champions League.
Even so the loss of Mbappé in particular will be a huge blow to the profile of Ligue 1 and to French football.
Mbappé has made it clear he wants to join Madrid despite tentative interest in him from Premier League clubs – he has spoken to Liverpool in the past – and a huge offer last summer which he turned down from Saudi club Al-Hilal, even though PSG agreed to sell him for what would have been a world record fee of £260 million.
